What: Information Conference on Consecrated Virginity Lived in the World

When: August 2-4, 2006

Where: Cenacle Retreat and Conference Center - Chicago, Illinois

Who: This conference is designed for:

  • women discerning and/or preparing for the vocation of the consecrated virgin living in the world
  • diocesan personnel who serve consecrated life. Diocesan personnel have special sessions with Archbishop Burke in order to concentrate on topics of interest to them as Vicars for Consecrated Life, spiritual directors, canon lawyers, pastors, and the like.

Sponsor: United States Association of Consecrated Virgins.

The Consecration of Virgins is among the oldest sacramentals of the Catholic Church. One of the fruits of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council was the restoration of this profound blessing for virgins living in the world. The revised Rite was promulgated on May 31, 1970.

Consecrated virginity is a distinct form of consecrated life in the Church. Therefore, while it is related to other forms of consecrated life, it is not identical to any of them.

The norms set down by the Church in order for a Catholic woman to petition for the Consecration state the following:

a. that she has never married or lived in public or open violation of chastity

b. that by her age, prudence, and universally approved character, she gives assurance of perseverance in a life of chastity dedicated to the service of the Church and of her neighbor

c. that she is admitted to this Consecration by the diocesan bishop

Presentations at the Information Conference include the essentials of this form of consecrated life as lived today in the United States and worldwide, as well as the history of the vocation and personal testimony about the spousal relationship with Jesus lived in daily life.

In addition to the talks, Holy Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours will be part of the daily schedule. Small group discussions, question and answer periods and a chance to have one-on-one discussion with the presenters will be provided. Also, opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and private prayer are part of the schedule.

Cost: to be determined
